Pool Maintenance: The 5 Most Important Pool Maintenance Tips

Here are our Top Maintenance Tips for Basic Pool Care

Tip #1 – Clear Debris

The most important tip to maintain one’s pool is to clean debris from the pool and the pool’s skimmer. A common maintenance issue is debris like leaves and blossoms falling into the pool.  Make life easier by trimming back trees and bushes that are dropping debris into your pool. Leaf nets are another option for minimizing falling debris.

Tip #2 – Vacuum

Typically, a pool should be vacuumed once a week.  Contrary to what one might expect, a pool that is used more requires less cleaning than one used less often.  Why?  Pools that experience a lot of activity and movement of the water bring debris to the surface where the skimmer can collect waste.  A pool that is not used frequently will see more sediment and, therefore, require more frequent vacuuming.

Vacuuming typically takes about 30 minutes and is performed in a similar fashion as mowing a lawn.  Move across the pool in over-lapping passes.  If the pool is too wide for a complete pass, vacuum half the pool from each side.

Tip #3 – Check and Adjust Chemicals

Testing and maintaining the correct pool chemical balances is easy and takes about 10 minutes.  pH levels should be adjusted first.  Soda ash should be used if the pH is below 7.4.  Use muriatic acid if the pH is above 7.6.  Next, the chlorine should be adjusted.  If the chlorine is below 1 ppm or alkalinity is below 90 ppm, dissolve (lithium-based) chlorine or alkalinity increaser like baking soda in a bucket of water, then pour it into the pool.

Tip #4 – Backwash Pool Filter

A pool filter can hold only so much.  Basic pool care requires the cleaning of the filter using what is known as the back-flow method.  Cleaning a sand or DE pool filter. Backwashing, as one might imagine, sends water backwards through the filter, to flush out the dirt trapped inside the filter sand bed, or to flush out dirty DE powder. Cartridge filters are not backwashed, only sand and DE pool filters require backwashing.

Simply turn the filter valve to “backwash” and run for 2-3 minutes, or until the water runs clear.

Tip #5 – Clean Pump Filter

Regular pool maintenance should include the cleaning of the pump’s filter.  To do so, shutoff the pump system, then close the skimmer valve in front of the pump to hold the water in place so the pump won’t need to be re-primed for start-up.  Unscrew the trap’s cover and remove basket to empty debris.
