It might seem early, but now’s the time to start getting your pool ready if you want to enjoy it in the early season. Fortunately, it’s relatively easy to get your pool ready for the summer. Just follow these seven steps.

In the first stage of cleaning your pool, you’re not concerned about the water color or residue on the pool bottom. All you’re worried about now is the presence of debris that might clog and/or damage the filters, pipes, plugs, pumps, and other components.
Once you’ve got the big debris cleaned out of your pool, it’s time to reassemble all the components you took apart when you closed your pool last year.
Take out any plugs you put in last year. Pumps, pipes, drains, filters, and more should all be put back into their working configurations. Make sure you clean all your filters before you start. Also remember to check your filters regularly—they’re likely to get quite dirty in this process and need frequent cleaning.
As part of your winterization process, you should have partially drained your pool enough that water couldn’t enter pipes, pumps, and other plumbing. In addition, you might have lost a significant amount to evaporation. Now it’s time to bring the water level up to the proper operating levels.
Through evaporation, debris accumulation, runoff, and more factors, the chemical balance of your pool will likely be off. We recommend that you test your water at home, but also bring a sample in for us to test.
Here’s why you should do both tests. First, it’s critical to know what your water is really like now. If you don’t have accurate readings on the state of your water, it can take more time and money to get the pool ready to use. That’s why a professional test is important at the beginning of the season.
Second, you need to be sure that your home testing equipment still works properly. Many supplies—like pH testing strips—can go bad quickly. Keeping your pool in shape all summer depends on being able to test the water accurately. If your values differ significantly from ours, it’s time to replace the equipment, get a refresher on how to use your tests, or both.
Once you know the chemical balance of your water, you know what you need to do to get the pH, chlorine, calcium, and other chemical levels right. It’s a good idea to start with a chlorine shock, then bring all the other values into line.
Chemicals don’t magically make the water right. It takes time—usually about a week—for the values to achieve the target numbers.
While you’re waiting, don’t forget to check and clean your filters regularly. Once the water clears, do one last test to make sure all the values are where they should be.
Next, do a final cleaning to get your pool ready. This means vacuuming the pool and scrubbing any areas that have accumulated residue. Add back any ladders, plus pool maintenance and recreation equipment you regularly keep in the pool, such as a floating chlorine pods.
