DIY Tips to Maintain a Beautiful Pool Deck

Posted on: April 22nd, 2021 by

A beautiful pool deck helps you enjoy your pool. It’s just more comfortable lounging around your pool when you feel your surroundings are attractive and you’re not obsessing about that one stain marring the deck. Plus, it’s more comfortable to invite company over to hang out by the pool if you aren’t worried that they’ll judge you on the condition of your deck.

Unfortunately, over time your pool deck can lose its luster, leading you to be unhappy when you spend time at your pool. If you want to keep enjoying your pool for years, even decades to come, it’s important to add your pool deck to your regular pool maintenance schedule. Here’s how.

Pick the Right Surface

There are many different surface options for your pool deck. Concrete is probably the most popular, because it’s inexpensive and durable. However, it’s also prone to staining, so it’s important to make sure you treat it with a sealant regularly.

Other options, such as tile and stone, might be better able to maintain their attractive appearance for longer.

Clean Up Spills Immediately

If you want to keep your pool deck beautiful, try to prevent stains. Nobody can prevent all spills, especially if you have kids eating and playing on the pool deck. But you can reduce the tendency of spills to turn into stains by cleaning them up right away.

Otherwise, colored liquids can seep into your pool deck, becoming harder to remove.

Sweep Dirt Away Daily

It isn’t just liquids that can cause stains on your pool deck. Any debris left on your pool deck for a significant length of time can turn into stains. Leaves, for example, can rot and turn into black stains.

To avoid this, sweep your deck regularly. This means daily when you’re actively using your pool and when trees are shedding leaves. At other times, a weekly sweeping of the pool deck should be sufficient to keep it from staining.

Doing a power wash can take the place of sweeping, if you’re thorough. Otherwise, adding extra water and letting it collect with dirt and debris can actually cause staining.

Do a Deep Clean Periodically

Don’t be afraid to get on your hands and knees and scrub when necessary. You can finish the cleaning with a power wash, but on its own, that’s usually not enough.

For serious stains, you can use trisodium phosphate (TSP) as a spot cleaner.

Have Realistic Expectations

Of course, you have to accept that no pool deck surface is going to last forever. And if you or a previous owner didn’t take good care of the deck, maintenance today might never make it look beautiful again.

That’s when it’s time to consider renovating or remodeling your pool deck.
